Children often express their thoughts, feelings, and behavior through play. We offer play therapy services to allow your children opportunities to:
Help build confidence and understanding of their thoughts, emotions, and actions through directive and non-directive activities
Learn healthy ways to express their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are difficult to verbalize using language
Learn and practice healthy communication, social, coping skills, problem-solving abilities, and choices
Develop skills to navigate stressful or difficult situations in life, such as academic challenges, athletic stressors, and social concerns
Sport Psychology Services
While coaches typically focus on the physical training in sport, sport psychologists focus on athletes' minds. Sport psychologists can help athletes of all ability levels achieve their performance goals using mental and emotional regulation strategies.
We work with athletes, exercisers, and performers who are committed to the pursuit of excellence, regardless of their sport, current ability level, age, ethnicity, gender, or orientation. Our aim is to improve athletic, social, academic, and professional performance. Techniques learned in sessions, such as relaxation, mental rehearsal, cognitive restructuring, goal setting, and motivational approaches, can even help people off the playing field in a variety of settings, such as at home, work, and school to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.
Performance and treatment plans are individually developed and customized based on each person’s background, skills, personality, and goals from a strength-based approach. Pursuit of excellence requires clear intentions, willingness to practice, cognitive and emotional flexibility, openness to growth and change, patience, and persistence in the face of pressure or adversity. Sometimes all we need is a spark to set things in motion.
Example scenarios that we can address:
Dealing with sport-related anxiety, high pressure situations, or losing focus during competition
Challenges communicating with parents, coaches, and/or teammates
Managing anger/frustration or even just motivating themselves to exercise
Athletic identity
Body image concerns
Choking in competitive events or during pivotal moments in a game
Building confidence in sport and other aspects of life
Recovering from sport-related injuries
Managing high expectations from self or others
Keeping up with an exercise program
Building satisfaction with sport participation
Making decisions during the recruiting and college selection process
Career planning and preparations for transitioning out of sport
Potential benefits of Sport Psychology include improvements with motivation, confidence, focus and learning effective ways to deal with distractions, reducing self-doubts and negative thinking patterns, learning ways to deal with mistakes and setbacks in performance, communicate effectively with parents, coaches, and teammates, and develop tactical plans for how to approach game scenarios or strategies.
There is no one size fits all approach, no quick fix, and no guarantees about the type of progress you may experience in counseling sessions as every person and situation is unique.
